The Friesian crossed with a warmblood: more movement, versatility and athletic ability.
The Warmblood Friesian is born from crossing the Friesian horse with a warmblood sport horse. It combines the presence and character of the Friesian with the movement, frame and athletic ability of the modern warmblood. The EAFS runs the Warmblood Friesian breeding programme with the same guarantees as the Arabo-Friesian: full papers, DNA verification and annual inspections.
Breeding goal
A sport horse with a recognisable Friesian type: dark coat, generous feathering, noble neck — but with the range of movement, balance and power of the warmblood. The programme sets precise blood proportions so the Friesian type stays dominant.
For which rider?
The Warmblood Friesian suits the dressage rider who wants Friesian expression with more spring and throughness, the driver looking for power and regularity, and the ambitious leisure rider who wants a spectacular yet manageable horse.
Health and genetic diversity
As with the Arabo-Friesian, the outside blood widens the genetic base and lowers the inbreeding-related risks of the purebred Friesian (research by Utrecht University and the Fenway Foundation). DNA parentage verification has been mandatory for every foal since 2024.
Registration and inspections
Online foal registration, passport, predicates and annual inspections in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Membership: €80 per year, all inclusive.
What is the difference between a Warmblood Friesian and an Arabo-Friesian? +
The Arabo-Friesian is crossed with the Arabian purebred (stamina, refinement); the Warmblood Friesian with a warmblood sport horse (movement, frame, dressage aptitude). Both keep the Friesian type and character and are registered by the EAFS.
Can a Warmblood Friesian compete in dressage? +
Yes — that is precisely its speciality: Friesian expression combined with the spring and elasticity of the warmblood. The EAFS Performance predicates reward competition results.
